Instructions for Borrowing

  1. Access the Universal Catalog of Georgia at http://giluc.usg.edu to search for books only.

  2. Click on the desired title to see a brief display of the item record and check its Status to determine if it is checked out, lost , or otherwise unavailable for loan. If it is available, click on Request.

  3. Select your Home Institution from the drop-down menu, enter your Social Security Number or Savannah State University ID number, enter your last name, and click on Log-on to Your Account.

  4. At the next screen, click on OK to choose GIL Express Request.

  5. At the next screen, enter your Social Security Number in the requested field, choose a Pick-Up Library, and click on Submit Request.

  6. If the request goes through, you will get a message YOUR Patron Initiated Request was Successful. This does not necessarily guarantee that the item will be sent. In most cases, the book will be shipped, but on some occasions, it will not. To check on the status of the request, you may review Your Account information.

  7. A request will sometimes fail for the following reasons; the item is available at the patron's home library; the item is checked out, missing, lost, etc, or otherwise not available for check out; the item is a reference book, archival item, or otherwise is not supposed to circulate; or the borrower is BLOCKED because of overdue books.

Notification:

  1. Check the progress of your request through Your Account available on either the Universal Catalog or the GIL Library Catalog accessible via the library's web page or click here.

  2. When the item arrives, you will receive a notice to pick it up at the Asa H. Gordon Library Circulation Desk unless you specified that the item be sent to another library. You may also check with the library staff at the Circulation Desk to inquire about your GIL Express item.

Circulation

  1. All Gil Express books circulate for 28 days, with two renewals.

  2. They may be returned to any USG (University System of Georgia) Library.

  3. They may be renewed online if they are renewed before their due dates. If they are allowed to become one day overdue, then the renew option is Lost.

  4. Overdue Gil Express items will cause the patron to be BLOCKED at all USG institutions, including one's Home Library. You are also blocked from getting the GALILEO password.

  5. Gil Express Patrons may have up to 50 remote requests at one time.
